CORESTM is a community based program which educates members of the local community how to intervene when somebody in the community is suicidal. The program takes the approach of “teaching people how to fish”, rather than giving them “food”, in that local community members are trained to be trainers and it is these local community people who deliver the program to their own community.
Suicide, and self-harm, continues to be a major issue in rural communities throughout Australia and this program educates community members how to act proactively in order to prevent somebody taking their life or self harming.
The Philosophy
“The more people from within
a community who complete the
training, the less likelihood there is
of someone at risk not receiving
help.
It empowers communities to watch
out for each other” |
Over a 12 month period, community members are trained to deliver the one day CORESTM course to around 250 people in the local community. After a year, the local community has formed its own network which will continue to train community members in the techniques of suicide intervention and prevention. We also work in with all of the local authorities and services, as the program is the first step in addressing the issues suicide and self-harm, with it developing referrals to professionals where the need arises.
The CORESTM program is an award winning program at a national and state level (Tasmania) and has established credentials throughout Australia in educating small rural communities to be proactive in suicide prevention and intervention. The CORESTM program was featured on the ABC television program, Landline, in November 2006.
