COMMUNITY BENEFIT & SUPPORT: Who will benefit from the project and how; demonstrate level of community support or consultation.
The whole of the community will benefit - Those who are considering suicide, those who are affected by their friends and relatives who either have considered or may have completed suicide. In communities where the program has already been delivered, suicide and self harm has been either tangibly reduced or eliminated for a significant period.
The benefit from the program (taking the one day course) is that ordinary community members are able to read the signs and successfully intervene with somebody recognised as being suicidal.
The community also benefits from bringing together a group of around 50 people who form the CORE team and this team serves as the focal point for community networking and capacity building enabling it to achieve future growth. This has been demonstrated in the rural communities who have undertaken the program (Kentish had the program delivered in 2003 and is still meeting and training community members).
PROJECT TIMEFRAME: Expected date of commencement and completion and key milestones.
The program commences when funding is obtained and completed over a 12 month period. Therefore, if a project commenced in July 2008, the official program will end in June 2009. As a result, the community will become part of the CORESTM community network and the course will continue to be delivered to the local community, by the local community, well after June 2009.
The milestones would be : - July 2008 – Launch of program – July 2008 – forming the CORE team - August 2008 – The training of Team Leaders (around 6 people)- September 2008 – Training local community members by the Team Leaders – (around 50 people) – November 2008 – Team meeting of CORE team and training in handling grief and communicating – November 2008 - Training local community members by the Team Leaders – (around 50 people) – January 2009 - Team meeting of CORE team and training in networking and making connections – January 2009- Training local community members by the Team Leaders – (around 50 people) – Between February and May 2009 - Training local community members by the Team Leaders – (around 100 people) – June 2009 – Official completion of program, update of Team Leaders and becoming part of the CORESTM network throughout Australia.
- PROJECT OUTCOMES: list expected outcomes e.g. sustainability, economic
There are four direct project outcomes:
- The elimination and/or the significant reduction in suicide and self harm in the local community (Health).
- The building of community capacity to be able to take ownership of suicide intervention and prevention (Social).
- The skilling of local community members to be able to train other community members (Education), therefore making the program sustainable well into the future.
- Becoming part of a national network of communities that further build capacity and relationships on a national level (Social).
